What AED 40,000 buys on the UAE used market right now

Most used-car advice in the UAE is written without looking at any cars. This one is written from the listings currently on CarSouq.ae, so the numbers describe what is genuinely on the market rather than what ought to be.

The middle of the market is AED 40,000

Across the cars listed today, the median asking price is around AED 40,000. That is the true middle: half the market is cheaper.

More striking is the bottom end. Sixty-two of the listed cars are under AED 30,000, which is more than a third of everything available. The UAE used market has real depth below the price most buyers start their search at.

Expect around 140,000 km

The median mileage across listed cars is roughly 140,000 km, and a third of them are over 200,000 km.

Those are high numbers by European standards and normal ones here. UAE driving is mostly highway, which is the gentlest kind of distance a car can cover, and a well-maintained car with 180,000 motorway kilometres can be in better condition than one with 90,000 city kilometres.

Judge the service history rather than the odometer. Ask when the timing belt was done, whether the gearbox oil has ever been changed, and who has been servicing it.

Nissan, Mercedes and Toyota lead the listings

The most listed makes are Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, followed by Kia, Volkswagen and Lexus.

That mix says something useful about the market: the volume is in Japanese and Korean cars that are cheap to run, alongside a steady supply of German cars that were expensive new and are now within reach used. Both are sensible buys for different reasons, and they fail in different ways.

Most of the stock is in Dubai

Around three quarters of the listed cars are in Dubai, with the rest spread across Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah.

If you are buying outside Dubai, the choice narrows quickly, and it is often worth the drive. If you are selling outside Dubai, you have less competition than a Dubai seller does.

Set your budget against the middle of the market rather than the top. At around AED 40,000 you are shopping where the most cars are, which means the most competition among sellers and the most room to negotiate.
