How to check a car's accident and flood history in the UAE

A used car's history is the difference between a bargain and an expensive mistake, and most of it can be checked before you ever see the car.

Everything below starts from one piece of information: the chassis number, also called the VIN. Ask the seller for it early. A seller who will not give you the chassis number has told you what you need to know.

What the official services show

The chassis number is what UAE platforms use to look up accident records. Emirates Vehicle Gate lists reports against a vehicle including the report number, the date, the emirate, the type of accident and the location. For cars registered in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Police e-services accident inquiry does the same thing.

A report that comes back clean is genuinely reassuring. It is not, however, proof of a clean car.

Why imported cars need an extra check

A large share of used cars in the UAE were imported, many of them from the United States, and a great many US cars reach auction precisely because they were damaged. Records from the American auction houses can reveal a write-off, flood damage or an odometer rollback that no UAE database will ever contain, because the damage happened before the car arrived.

If the car is American specification, check the VIN against an international history service as well as the local one. This is the single highest-value check you can make on an imported car.

What no report will tell you

Reports are built from insurance claims and police records. They do not contain damage that was never reported.

A car repaired privately in a garage, repainted after a scrape, or fixed by the owner will show nothing at all. Flood damage in particular is often invisible on paper and obvious in person.

So: look for mismatched paint texture between panels, a boot or spare-wheel well that smells musty, silt or a water line under the carpets and in the seat rails, corrosion on bolt heads and seat rails that is out of step with the car's age, and electrical faults that come and go.

Do both

Run the chassis number, then pay a workshop to inspect the car on a ramp before you commit.

An independent inspection in the UAE costs a fraction of one repair and is the only step that catches what the paperwork misses. A seller who refuses to let the car be inspected is answering your question.
